Sharp Reflections’ PreStack Pro software contains dedicated seismic inversion modules to transform seismic reflectivities and amplitude versus angle (AVA) signatures into impedances, facies, and other rock and fluid properties. This interactive online course guides you through the principles behind pre-stack Bayesian seismic inversion and its practical, hands-on application.

Our knowledgeable team will help you through a real-world inversion project, investigating the seismic response of a complex heterogeneous reservoir. At the end of the course, you will understand basic inversion concepts, and be able to set up, run, and quality control seismic inversions using PreStack Pro software.

Two complementary algorithms are covered in the course: CRAVA and PCube+. CRAVA is a traditional pre-stack inversion which calculates elastic rock properties (density, Vp, Vs) from seismic amplitude cubes. PCube+ is a newer, “one-step” approach that estimates the probabilities of distinct lithology and fluid classes directly from the seismic data, with the aid of prior models that incorporate petrophysical reservoir properties and seismic horizons.  Both methods transform seismic reflectivity volumes into layered property cubes, which provide valuable input to 3D reservoir models.

Delegates should have an understanding of basic rock physics and Amplitude Versus Offset principles. Attendance of Sharp Reflections’ Introduction to Pre-Stack Data Analysis provides this, but it is not a requirement. Day one of the program will introduce the PreStack Pro software package, including data loading and navigation. Videos accompanying the program cover theory behind the seismic response and its inversion as well as details of the inversion algorithms used in CRAVA and PCube+

Hardware requirements

You don’t need a supercomputer to process the data sets. We will test your environment together beforehand – here’s what you will need:

  • An up-to-date browser (eg Chrome, Safari, Firefox) with a stable internet connection (>15Mb/s)
  • Ability to install HP Remote Graphics Software – download for free here for PC or here for MAC
  • Ability to use Teams video-conference application
  • A reasonable desktop/screen area (minimum 1920 x 1080), but to get the best experience we recommend two screens.
  • Ability to display or print PDF guide to follow while working.
  • Ability to view MP4-video files.
  • A microphone and speaker or headphones.
